Tax on a Ghanaian betting win, and the two things that ended in 2025
Two things ended on 2 April 2025 and they are constantly written about as one. One came out of your win. The other came out of every transfer you made. Neither exists now, and the difference still matters for any year before it.
The withholding on winnings
A 10% withholding on gross winnings ran from 2023 until 2 April 2025.
The word doing the work in that sentence is gross. The tax was applied to the whole amount returned rather than to the profit, so a punter who staked GH₵5,000 across a month and had GH₵5,000 returned was taxed GH₵500 on a break-even month. That is why the repeal mattered more than a 10 per cent headline suggests, and why a page describing Ghana as a country that has never taxed winnings is wrong about every year a reader can remember.
Betting in Ghana is licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, and the age is 18+ throughout the country.
The levy on transfers
The Electronic Transfer Levy was cut from 1.5% to 1% at the start of 2023 and then repealed outright on 2 April 2025, and the GRA told charging entities to stop deducting the same day and refund anything taken after it. No government levy sits on a mobile money transfer today.
| Date | Rate | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 1 May 2022 | 1.5% | introduced |
| 1 January 2023 | 1% | reduced |
| 2 April 2025 | 0% | repealed |
This is the levy on moving money, not the tax on winning it. It applied to a deposit as much as to a withdrawal, and to every other transfer you made that had nothing to do with betting.
Nothing on this page is tax advice and this desk is not qualified to give any. What it is: two dates, two instruments, and the reason they are printed separately. If a page tells you either one still applies, or that neither ever did, check the date it was written.
About tax on a win
- Do I pay tax on a betting win in Ghana?
- Not today. The withholding on winnings was repealed on 2 April 2025 and a licensed operator pays a win in full.
- Was it always like that?
- No, and this is where most pages go wrong in the other direction. A 10 per cent withholding on GROSS winnings ran from 2023 until 2 April 2025. Gross, not net: it was taken off the whole win rather than off the profit, so a punter who staked heavily and won modestly could be taxed on more than they were up.
- What about the tax the bookmaker pays?
- A tax on the operator's gaming revenue still exists. It is an operator obligation and it does not reduce what a player receives, so it is not a deduction from your win and should not be described as one.
- Is there still a levy on mobile money?
- No. The electronic transfer levy was repealed on 2 April 2025 and the revenue authority told charging entities to stop deducting it the same day and refund anything taken after. That is a different repeal from the one above and they happened to land on the same date.
